Thomas Birch Freeman (1809-1890)  was a British Methodist missionary to West Africa, born in Hampshire the son of a freed slave. He was accepted as a Wesleyan Methodist missionary in 1837, after he had been head gardener on a Suffolk estate. Subject matter originates from Miguel de Cervante's novel Don Quixote, part 1: 'They espied a youth dressed like a peasant stooping to bath his lovely feet in the rivulet… the lovely maiden looked up…'. Label on back, hand-written 'Wife of Robert Potter.' / Has original cardboard presentation box with lid. Top and sides decorated with a pink paper with small sprig and flower design in red, green and maroon. Lid decorative paper partly covers a plain red paper beneath. Style is Anglo-American but with a circular metal suspension loop at the top of the back of the image.Label on back, hand-written 'Wife of Robert Potter.' / Has original cardboard presentation box with lid.
